Alison Goodmans favoritböcker

Många är vi som ständigt letar efter tips på ny bra läsning. Kanske är det klassiker man missat, eller nya spännande berättelser från debutanter? Hurusom är det alltid uppskattat med tips i rätt riktning, då det är lite av en djungel bland alla böcker.
Alison Goodman är en av många prisade författare vars böcker vi har på våra hyllor och senaste boken från henne, The Dark Days Club, har varit mycket uppskattad bland personalen (och då inte bara för sitt fina omslag).
Eftersom vi gärna tipsar om henne böcker blev vi förstås lite nyfikna på vad hon själv skulle rekommendera om hon fick chansen, sagt och gjort så frågade vi henne, och som svar fick en lista över hennes 10 SF- och fantasyfavoriter.

My 10 Favourite Fantasy/SF Reads (in no particular order):

1. Tea With The Black Dragon by R.A. MacEvoy. A beautifully written mystery/fantasy that is also a poignant book about mature love…with a dragon.
2. Neuromancer by William Gibson. My introduction to cyberpunk, which influenced my first novel Singing The Dogstar Blues.
3. The Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey. I could have picked five more of McCaffrey’s books for the list, including Dragonsong and The White Dragon. Her strong female characters, empathetic style and seamlessly created worlds are always a delight.
4. Sabriel by Garth Nix. Great storytelling and one of the most imaginative magic systems I have come across.
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. This is my favourite of the series, but I love them all. What can you say, but fun, fun, fun with an added layer of delicious humour and a beautifully realized coming-of-age quest story.
6. The Gandalar Cycle: The Steel of Raithskar by Randall Garrett & Vicki Ann Heydron. This is the first in a terrific seven book SF adventure series that has a modern-day man transported into the body of a “Rider” –a man who has a telepathic link with a giant cat—on another world. Gripping, with a great protagonist.
7. Jhereg by Steven Brust. Hilarious, well-written comedy fantasy about witch assassin Vlad Taltos and his smart mouthed “familiar”.
8. The Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. A recent find for me. The first in a series that combines modern-day London with a wonderful underworld of river spirits, all in the mode of a humorous police procedural.
9. The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Classic SF comedy. The Vogon poetry cracks me up every time.
10. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. A cautionary masterpiece that still haunts me. Exquisite and bone chilling.
