När Annie gifter sig med änkemannen Edward Stonehouse och kommer till hans gård ute på Yorkshire-hedarna tror att hon lämnat allt elände bakom sig. Där bor också systern Iris, som inte bara stoppar upp djur utan även är ett medium. Hon varnar Annie för svarta fjädrarna på platser som hemsökts av andar. Först tror hon inte mycket på pratet - men sen börjar hon fundera över vad som egentligen hände Edwards förra hustru och varför Iris verkar vara så orolig.
