Häxor är naturligt frisinnade och de har naturligtvis inga ledare. Granny Weatherwax var den mest ansedda av de ledare de inte har. Men även hon insåg att det är mycket svårare att ingripa i kunglig politik än vad en viss pjäsförfattare låter påskina. Speciellt när gudarna ingriper och spelar andra spel än schack. Och gudar spelar aldrig schack.

Three witches - Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick - have gathered on a lonely heath. A king has been cruelly murdered, his throne usurped by his ambitious cousin. An infant heir and the crown of the kingdom, both missing . . .
