Amonkhet is released today. To read the full story and lore behind it all, follow this link. But who actually pays attention the story of magic? None, that's who. You're here for the cards.
Not to disappoint, Amonket introduces 264 cards to bring the power of the planes to you. Full visual spoiler here. Amonkhet marks one of the few times Wizards of the Coast have changed the iconic card graphic design for a limited number of cards in the set, this time with a super rare limited set randomly inserted into the booster of Amonkhet, Invocations cards. These cards are reprint foil cards of some of the most sought after cards in Magic's past.
Some new mechanics include:
- The "Brick" counter, used to enable additional abilities on cards.
- The "Exert" mechanic, used to gain extra ability from a creature. "You make the decision whether to exert a creature as you declare it as an attacker. If you choose to have it exert, an ability will trigger and grant you some bonus. As a trade-off, the creature won't untap during your next turn. You don't have to exert the creature as it attacks. If you don't, no ability will trigger, and it will untap normal (sic) during your next turn.
- The "Embalm" mechanic, is a graveyard trick that lets you play a spell from the graveyard by paying the mana cost, but does not count as casting the card.
